Japanese contemporary poetry, “gendaishi”, has been accompanying Japan’s post-1945 history with innovative literary concepts. From the theme of wreckage of the first post-war years to the lyrical reconstruction of the atom-bomb droppings all the way to the poetry of subcultural countermovements and lyrical works of digital origin – the gendaishi is a diverse and fascinating part of the literary scene in Japan.
