The requirements for subtitling have changed substantially in the last few years. In addition to linguistic mastery, translators nowadays must also have a deep understanding of inter-media and inter-text conceptuality. Taking examples not just from modern films, such as SHIN GODZILLA or YOUR NAME, but also from classics like PRINCESS MONONOKE, this lecture by Roland Domenig, Associate Professor at Meiji Gakuin University Tokyo, exposes the challenges facing the modern translator.
